Sheriff warns of DMV scam
The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents of a rise in scams impersonating the Department of Motor Vehicles.
According to the sheriff: In the latest scam the perpetrators pose as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and send the victim a text or email. The text/email tells the victim that they have unpaid tolls, and that if the tolls aren’t paid by the next day their vehicle’s registration will be suspended. A link is then provided, which when clicked will re-direct the person to a fraudulent DMV website.
If a county resident thinks they may have been the victim of a scam, they are encouraged to contact the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office at 845-486-3800 or via the tipline at 845-605-CLUE or dcsotips@gmail.com.
