Built in 1881, Castle Rock was originally built as a summer home for William Osborn. Osborn was the Illinois Central Railroad president. Legend has it that this castle was Frank Baum’s inspiration for the castle in The Wizard of Oz and in 1977, this castle became a national landmark. Today this castle is privately owned but surrounded by hiking trails open to the public.

The Methodist Church of Matteawan was originally built in 1860 for a whopping $7000 dollars and could fit about 400 people. Unfortunately for the better part of the decade this church remained virtually unoccupied because it was in the way of a new railroad being built (railroad tracks by the Roundhouse). At the end of the decade, the church was sold to Dutchess and Columbia railroad for $12,000 and was demolished. The new construction placed the church on what is now the end of Main Street in 1870. 43 years later when the city of Beacon was founded, the church had its name changed to the First Methodist Episcopalian Church. Today it’s known as the Beacon Light Tabernacle Church.
