Conserving Nature is Climate Smart
Tuesday, April 25, 2023 from 1-2:30pm
Virtual event hosted by the Hudson River Estuary Program
Click here to register via Webex.
Nature is an integral part of climate solutions – but what does that mean for local governments? Natural areas store and sequester carbon, cool temperatures, and buffer storm surges and floods. New York’s Climate Smart Communities Program supports local governments in adapting to climate change, building community resilience, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Participating communities benefit from free technical assistance and access to grants. This webinar will focus on climate smart actions related to land-use planning and protecting nature, addressing:

  • Key roles natural areas play in climate resilience;

  • An overview of the Climate Smart Communities Program;

  • An introduction to climate smart actions for planning, zoning, and protection of natural areas; and

  • A case study of climate smart actions from the Town of New Paltz.

The mission of the Climate Action Film Festival® is to bring together activists, filmmakers, and communities to witness powerful stories of climate action, and to inspire further action, locally and beyond. Many of this year's selected films focus on community building as a form of climate action. Social movements rely on the strength of collective impact, and enacting climate action is no different. From voting to marching in the streets, change only comes when we come together. But in order to show up for a collective need, like saving our planet, we need to first know the collective — we need to know each other. Community builds understanding, which builds empathy, which builds solidarity. Show up for CAFF, show up for each other, show up for the planet. climateactionfilmfestival.com

D'Arcy Simpson Art Works Presents: Chromatic Scale by Michael Simpson
Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 5-8pm
D'Arcy Simpson Art Works, 409 Warren Street, Hudson
Michael Simpson continues his rigorous series of color field paintings in his latest show “Chromatic Scale.” These paintings explore and experiment with color relationships and interactions in ways that transcend the physical material, creating a psychological, emotive effect. The artist rubs pigment into raw wood, allowing the material’s porousness and grain to influence the texture and saturation of each panel. Each color is improvised and organically mixed, their surfaces vacillating between translucency and opacity. He then assembles 4 panels that uniquely interact and vibrate as a cohesive piece, similar to a musician playing individual notes at once to create a chord. On view through June 1, 2023. darcysimpsonartworks.com
