Week of August 5-11, 2024

This 129-foot schooner is a replica of the 19th century ship, La Amistad, which became widely known for the 1839 uprising of enslaved captives from Sierra Leone who overthrew the crew and ordered their captors to steer them back to Africa (they instead sailed north, and the ship was seized off the coast of Long Island, where the Africans were then charged with murder and their captors were set free...). Learn more this week during the lecture, “New York at the Amistad Rebellion of 1839” on Tuesday, August 6 in the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s Homeport Barn. The ship will be docked in the Rondout, and deck tours will take place through August 7, Community Open Day, with Pay-What-You-Can Ship Tours from 10am to 7:30pm and free live entertainment from 3-7pm. The Amistad is a replica of the historic schooner commandeered by African captives as they fought for freedom in the 1839 Amistad Uprising. The vessel is what is known as top-sail schooner, or a Baltimore Clipper – a recreation of what historians believe to be the best representation of what La Amistad would have looked like on the outside in 1839. The recreation of the Amistad ship was built in Mystic, Connecticut and launched in 2000. Community Day: Wednesday, August 7, pay what you can deck tours, entertainment and more; Film screening of Amistad on August 4 at 6:30pm. https://www.hrmm.org/amistad.html

Bellefield Garden Talk: Beatrix Farrand's Designs for Vassar College
Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 11am - noon
Cost: Free
Beatrix Farrand Garden, 4097 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park
Beatrix Farrand served as Consulting Landscape Gardener to Vassar College from 1925-1929. Although she is well known for her institutional designs — an unusual practice for a woman at the time—her important campus work has received scant study, beyond her designs for Princeton and Yale. Drawing on Farrand’s archives at Berkeley and a rich trove of surviving materials at Vassar, this talk presents her working processes and projects for the Vassar campus. Most significantly, she established the Vassar arboretum, conceiving it to comprise the entire campus: she mixed formal and informal design elements, and native and foreign species, to create a beautiful setting that would serve the instructional needs of students and faculty—a notion that has come to be central to Vassar’s identity. Vassar was Farrand’s one opportunity to work at a women’s college, and she came to campus during a significant period for women and landscape, on the grounds and in the curriculum. Chair of Botany and pioneering ecologist Edith Roberts was fostering progressive programs in native plant ecology and landscape architecture—efforts that reformed young women’s training and career prospects, and made Vassar an early center for women and landscape. But all these projects also encountered resistance, so this narrative is one of progressive ideas, both realized and thwarted. Yvonne Elet is Professor of the History of Art and Architecture at Vassar. Her research and publications focus on integrated designs for architecture and landscape, from Italian Renaissance villas to twentieth century American estates, and on designers from Raphael to Farrand. beatrixfarrandgardenhydepark.org/events/vassar

What did the "Gilded Age" mean to the free, Black community of the Staatsburg village? Join site staff for a one-hour conversation exploring that question through census records, historic maps, and the larger context of race relations during the Gilded Age. Often pushed to the outskirts of society by White Americans, Black men and women were nonetheless able to foster a strong community in the face of constant adversity. Long marginalized in the historical narrative, the free Black community of the Staaatsburg village reveals the triumphs and struggles of generations of African Americans in the Hudson Valley. Ever since Jaanika Peerna was a little girl dreaming of becoming an Olympic figure skater in the northern European country of Estonia, the material of ice has been close and dear to her: its toughness, transparency, beauty, as well as fragility.
