For Upstate Art Weekend 2023, Garrison Art Center will feature the incredible work of James Murray. James is an accomplished artist with an inspiring background, having graduated from the School of Visual Arts and is a U.S. Merchant Marine Captain. As a sculpture-teaching artist and exhibiting artist member of the Garrison Art Center, James creates stunning works of art using reclaimed wood, steel, stone, and found objects. During the weekend of July 21-24, visitors to the Garrison Art Center will have the opportunity to view a selection of James Murray’s completed work displayed throughout the grounds of the Art Center including the riverfront park of Garrison’s Landing. Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23, visitors will have the opportunity to experience a steam bending demonstration along with wood assembly by Murray. Head to the rolling hills and bucolic countryside of Eastern Dutchess and celebrate the deeply rooted equestrian traditions of the Hudson Valley at the Millbrook Horse Trials. Enjoy four days of dressage, cross-country and show jumping competitions, as well as a country fair with vendors, food trucks, a petting zoo and other family-friendly activities. As the only remaining competition in the Northeast to offer an Advanced division, the Millbrook Horse Trials is an important event on the national calendar and will feature roughly 400 competitors of all levels, from Olympic riders to local amateurs. There are many examples of people in Dutchess County who have heroically championed the fight for equality in America, from the Abolitionist Movement through the Civil Rights Movement. Celebrated activist, writer and orator Frederick Douglass — who had escaped bondage in Maryland and went on to become an iconic figure in the antislavery and women’s suffrage movements of the 19th century — delivered an inspirational speech at the Collegiate School in Poughkeepsie (now College Hill Park) on Aug. 2, 1858, and implored the audience of 4,000 to demand justice and end slavery in the United States. In commemoration of this important event, the City of Poughkeepsie and the nonprofit organization Celebrating the African Spirit have joined forces to present the third-annual Frederick Douglass Day on the site of his impassioned speech. Music, food and performances will honor the significance of Douglass' speech and applaud the local people who were in attendance and witnessed history that day. Eight action-packed weeks of performing arts at Bard College’s 20th annual SummerScape! This year’s schedule includes theatrical performances of “Illinois,” which is the product of the brilliant collaboration between three artists (Tony Award-winner Justin Peck, composer Sufjan Stevens and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury) to create spectacular display of storytelling, dance, theater and music based on Stevens’ 2005 album titled “Illinois.” Also on tap are performances of the French opera “Henri VIII” by Camille Saint-Saens. Directed by Jean-Romain Vesperini, this production stars Alfred Walker (bass-baritone) as Henri VIII and Lindsay Ammann (mezzo-soprano) as Anne Boleyn. The Spiegeltent, meanwhile, will keep the party hopping all summer long with live music performances, drinks and dancing. SummerScape also includes the 33rd incarnation of the Bard Music Festival, which will explore the life and work of Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of the greatest symphonists of the 20th century. Air Shows at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome

Up, up and away! The Aerodrome is set to begin a new season of high-flying action with antique air shows every Saturday and Sunday! The Saturday "History of Flight" program highlights the Pioneer Era before World War I and the Golden Age of Aviation in the 1920s and 30s. The Sunday air show is the World War I dog-fight spectacular, with a hero or heroine, the villainous Black Baron of Rhinebeck, scenery, pyrotechnics and a World War I tank, along with many antique automobiles. There are usually between 15 and 20 flyable aircraft for each show, including a 1909 Bleriot, a Fokker DR-1 Triplane and a precise replica of the Spirit of St. Louis. Open-cockpit biplane rides — which offer stunning views of the Hudson River and the surrounding highlands — are available before and after the air shows from 10 a.m. until twilight. Developed in collaboration with a distinguished committee of scholars, “Black Americans, Civil Rights and the Roosevelts, 1932-1962” centers the historical voices of many Black community leaders, wartime service members, and ordinary citizens who engaged the Roosevelt administration directly and who pushed for progress. Within this context, the exhibit examines the political evolution of both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt regarding racial justice. Corridor of Commerce History Hunt: a County-wide Family Scavenger Hunt!

Back for its 3rd year with new clues, this month-long, free, family-friendly scavenger hunt introduces participants to local history by providing clues that lead to historical sites, buildings, or markers throughout the county. You have one month to follow the clues and take a picture at the many historical sites, buildings, or markers. Along the way, you'll learn about Putnam County’s history as a Corridor of Commerce! Every location you visit enters you into the random drawing to win a grand prize. The more places you visit, the more likely you are to win! Register online for free to receive your History Hunt clue packet via email (or pick one up at the museum beginning August 1). The Elting Library's 66th Annual Library Fair & Book Sale
October 14-15 2023 from 9am - 4pm on Saturday and 10am - 3pm on Sunday

Entry to the fair is free, or shop for books as an early bird on Saturday at 8am for only $10 or on Sunday at 9:30 for $5 (when most items will be half-price). Thousands of books in three dozen categories as well as LPs, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, children's books, toys, and activities, silent auction and raffle with over 100 prizes including a mid-week stay for two at Mohonk Mountain House, plus music all day with a great lineup of Eric Keeling, The New Paltz Resisterhood, David Rodriguez, Jeff Pfeffer, The Edukated Fleas, Leslie Abdallah, and Vickie Russell. Donations of books in good condition may be brought to the bookshed in the library parking lot, at the corner of North Front and Church Streets, on Wednesdays (10am-12pm), Saturdays (9am-11am), and Sundays (10am-12pm).
