Chasing Icebergs: Art and a Disappearing Landscape

The first winter exhibition at Olana State Historic Site will be shown primarily in the Sharp Family Gallery at Olana, and highlights Frederic Church’s iceberg sketches from his 1859 intrepid voyage to the Arctic. Risking his life, Church chartered a ship to the treacherous waters surrounding Newfoundland and Labrador — an area known as Iceberg Alley — on a mission that made him the first American artist to explore the region for the purpose of painting icebergs, a landmark event in the history of art. The exhibit includes photographs and historic texts which Church collected about icebergs and Arctic exploration, as well as the work of four contemporary artists who contemplate the wonder and fragility of Earth’s polar environments.For tickets and additional information, visit OLANA.org/icebergs.

Cary Institute wildlife biologist Mike Fargione and educator Ashley Alred will lead an evening hike exploring the sights and sounds of spring on our campus. Discover how resident plants, amphibians, birds, and mammals are adapting to the change from winter to spring. We will travel around the property in cars and vans, leapfrogging between different habitats to look at how plants and animals adjust to the changing seasons. Our path will include stops in marshes, fields, and forests to see what signs of spring we can find. We will visit a vernal pool to look and listen for amphibians and learn about the threats they face. If conditions are right, we may be treated to a frog chorus or a breeding display by an American Woodcock. Please dress for the weather, wear appropriate hiking footwear, and, if you have them, bring a flashlight and binoculars. We will be walking off the trails, so a walking stick or ski pole may be helpful. Hiking will be easy to moderate level of difficulty. Join the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater on Friday, April 14 from 9am-1pm for a symposium on the Clean Water Act to reflect upon the progress made in the 50-years since its passage, explore its limitations, and discuss opportunities and emerging threats to continued progress toward a swimmable and fishable Hudson River. Passed in 1972, the Clean Water Act established the goal of fishable and swimmable waters across the United States by 1983, as well as the elimination of pollutants into navigable waters by 1985. Though these goals have yet to be met, the CWA has resulted in significant improvements to water quality in the Hudson River and its tributaries. At the same time, new threats to the Hudson have emerged, creating new obstacles to reaching the goals of the Clean Water Act. The symposium will bring together experts from across the region to explore the history of the Clean Water Act, progress towards its goals over the last five decades, as well as new emerging threats to the Hudson River. Back by popular demand, Smokey Bear will be returning to the Museum with some of his wildlife friends! First, we will meet live birds of prey, and learn how we can all protect these regal birds by being fire safe. Then the big man himself will visit the Museum, Smokey Bear, who will pose for pictures with visitors. Kids will also meet a DEC Forest Ranger and learn about their job and their equipment. Finally, kids can complete a forest animal-themed craft project. It’s going to be a wild time at the Museum, so don’t miss it! All activities are free and will be outdoors. 2023 Rosendale Street Festival

The Rosendale Street Festival is a family-friendly, not-for-profit grassroots organization that was started in 1978 to showcase local talent and to celebrate the birthday of Rosendale icon, Uncle Willy. Today, the Rosendale Street Fest continues this tradition and has evolved into a two-day event that closes Main Street and boasts six stages, over 70 bands, over 100 of the best vendors in the Hudson Valley, a dance party, kids crafts, and short films. Street Fest is an entirely volunteer-run event, and proceeds go to supporting the Kingston, New Paltz, and Rondout Valley School District music departments. Community members are always welcome to join the committee. Planning meetings are held live at The Rosendale Theatre or on Mountain Stage in Willow Kiln Park and also on Zoom. There are also a variety of volunteer opportunities available during the two-day event, and volunteers are always needed.
