Week of May 8-14, 2023

Terraforming: Olana’s Historic Photography Collection Unearthed  will open this weekend at Olana State Historic Site in Hudson. Inspired by Olana’s significant collection of nearly 2,000 19th century international photographic prints, artist and guest curator David Hartt reflects on the ways in which human culture and activity shape the land, eroding the boundary between human construction and the natural world, just as Frederic Church did in creating the 250-acre earthwork that is Olana.

Pictured: Claude-Joseph Désiré Charnay (1828-1915), “Palais du Gouverneur, à Uxmal, Façade Principale”, 1860, 19th-century photographic print, image size: 13 1/16 x 16 ½ inches, historic mount: 19 9/16 x 24 7/16 inches and 19 5/8 x 24 11/16 inches, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Stressed Out Soils: A Conversation with Jane Lucas
Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 7pm
In-person at the Cary Institute auditorium in Millbrook, and virtually
A science conversation featuring Jane Lucas, an ecologist researching threats facing soils, and how they can be understood and managed in the face of global change. Healthy soils produce the majority of our food supply, buffer extreme weather, and safeguard water resources. They lock away twice the amount of carbon stored in plants and trees and are hotspots for antibiotic discoveries. Yet we are losing fertile soil much faster than it can be replaced. In conversation with Cary President Josh Ginsberg, Lucas will explore the state of soils. This will include insight into her research on microbial ecology, soil food webs, and how antibiotic introductions into our soil environments (via livestock) shapes microbiomes, antibiotic resistance, and soil's ability to store water and carbon. RSVP required at EventBrite

On view through June 1, 2023
D'Arcy Simpson Art Works, 409 Warren Street, Hudson
Michael Simpson continues his rigorous series of color field paintings in his latest show “Chromatic Scale.” These paintings explore and experiment with color relationships and interactions in ways that transcend the physical material, creating a psychological, emotive effect. The artist rubs pigment into raw wood, allowing the material’s porousness and grain to influence the texture and saturation of each panel. Each color is improvised and organically mixed, their surfaces vacillating between translucency and opacity. He then assembles 4 panels that uniquely interact and vibrate as a cohesive piece, similar to a musician playing individual notes at once to create a chord. darcysimpsonartworks.com

Exhibition Opening: Indigenous Peoples in Putnam County & Cold Spring Tempestries
Friday, May 19, 2023 from 5-7pm
Cost: Free
63 Chestnut St Cold Spring NY, Cold Spring
At this exhibition opening, explore the ways our local environment has changed around us and learn about the Indigenous peoples who were the first inhabitants of this land. Putnam County is part of the ancestral homelands of the Wappinger, an Indigenous group within the larger cultural umbrella of the Lenape peoples. The Wappinger lived from the banks of the Mahicanituck (Hudson River) in Dutchess and Putnam counties, east into Connecticut, and southward into Westchester County. The Indigenous Peoples in Putnam County exhibition explores Lenape and Wappinger culture in Putnam County, with a special focus on the Woodland period when these cultures flourished in the Hudson Valley. The exhibition will feature artifacts and replicas, including stone tools, projectile points, stone fishing weights, pottery sherds, and a c. 19th century dugout canoe. The exhibition is funded in part by the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, the American Historical Association, and the Cold Spring Lions Club. The Cold Spring Tempestry Collection, a temporary installation organized by the Endless Skein and the larger world-wide Tempestry Project, will display a year's temperature range in the Cold Spring area from 1900 to 2021, through 365 knitted, crocheted, or woven rows of yarn, each color-coded to a standard spectrum of 32 yarn colors. The exhibition combines modern scientific record-keeping with various cultures' historic storytelling through needlework textiles, creating a Tempestry that visualizes climate data in a way that is accurate, personal, tangible, and beautiful. Registration not required, but appreciated. putnamhistorymuseum.org/events
