Week of October 23-29, 2023

Protecting Wetlands and Streams in Your Community
Various dates
Virtual event
Protecting wetlands and streams is vital to safeguarding water resources, but gaps in federal and state regulations leave many wetlands and streams vulnerable to degradation and loss. The Supreme Court’s recent Sackett ruling significantly rolled back federal protection for wetlands and streams. New York State is meanwhile set to expand some protection for wetlands, but major gaps remain, especially for smaller wetlands, seasonal streams, and adjacent buffers around these sensitive water resources. This program will cover the importance and functions of wetlands and streams in the Hudson Valley; status and changes to federal and state wetlands and stream regulations; and ways local government can provide more comprehensive protection for these key water resources.

  • Monday, October 23, 2023 from 6:30-8pm - register via Zoom, offered in partnership with Dutchess County Planning Federation and Ulster County Planning Department

  • Thursday, November 9, 2023 from 1-2:30pm - register via Webex

Hybrid Lecture: Dutchess & Putnam County and the Hudson Valley Land Wars
Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 7-8:30pm
Cost: $10
Virtual + at the Putnam History Museum, 63 Chestnut St Cold Spring
In the 1760s Dutchess County (which then included Putnam) was a “land in controversy” as landlords, tenant farmers, and the Wappinger fought over who owned these parts. First, the Wappinger and tenants joined forces and went to court. When that failed, they took different paths in search of justice: tenant farmers set up a “Mob Government,” then faced off against British troops near modern Patterson; the Wappinger, meanwhile, sailed to England, where they lobbied Crown officials to restore their homeland. This talk brings to light this largely forgotten episode in the history of Putnam/Dutchess. putnamhistorymuseum.org/events/hybrid-lecture-dutchess-putnam-county-and-the-hudson-valley-land-wars/

This history hike of the North and South Redoubts will lead hikers to both redoubts, discussing the history of chaining the Hudson during the Revolutionary War and how the redoubts helped defend the chain, the river, and the Continental cause. This 3 mile hike is considered moderate to strenuous, featuring steep portions and rocky areas.
