From Founders to Farmers: 17th through early 20th Century Archaeology in the Hudson Valley
Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 7pm
In-person and Virtual event hosted by the Putnam History Museum, 63 Chestnut Street, Cold Spring
Discussion on historic period archaeology in the Hudson Valley from the early 17th through 20th centuries. Historic period archaeology may look at urban settlements, rural farmsteads, trading sites, commercial and industrial occupations, waterfront sites and more specialized occupations. It increasingly focuses on those who lived in these sites but who are underrepresented in the historical record. Questions on ethnicity, status, economic conditions, trade and exchange, ritual, conflict, lifestyle, changing landscapes and much more in the Hudson Valley are addressed by archaeological patterns recovered from such sites. These yield artifacts like ceramics and glassware, to faunal and floral remains. Site and artifact data merge with documents such as diaries, wills, local histories, deeds and much more to shed light on individuals or families from the past and the conditions and circumstances in which they lived. putnamhistorymuseum.org

This is followed by two dance pieces: Eduard Strauss’ train-themed polka Bahn frei!, and his brother Johann Jr.'s Emperor Waltz, composed for the 40thanniversary of Emperor Franz Josef’s crowning. The program closes with a contrasting style from the same era, Mahler’s deeply personal Symphony No. 6. https://ton.bard.edu/fisher-center-series/

44 West Bridge Street, Catskill
One of just a handful of undisputed classics of the American stage, Tennessee Williams’ haunting “The Glass Menagerie” comes to Bridge Street Theatre’s intimate “Priscilla” Mainstage, located at 44 West Bridge Street in Catskill, NY, for a two-weekend run October 5 – 15, 2023. Originally premiered in 1944, William’s poetically autobiographical memory play catapulted its young author from obscurity into fame (and notoriety). BST will present Williams’ moving remembrance of family ties, lost dreams, and shattered illusions incorporating elements from Williams’ original, pre-production draft of the script, and utilizing the incidental music composed for the initial production by author and composer Paul Bowles. The production will be directed by BST Associate Artist Steven Patterson, with Leigh Strimbeck as Amanda Wingfield, Sarah Jayne Rothkopf as her daughter Laura, Brett Mack as her son Tom, and Russell Sperberg as gentleman caller Jim O’Connor. bridgest.org/the-glass-menagerie/.

Putnam County’s Mysterious Stone Chambers: Panel Discussion
Friday October 6, 2023 from 7-8:30pm
Cost: $25
Virtual and in-person at the Desmond-Fish Public Library, 472 NY-403, Garrison
The Stone Chambers of Putnam County are a captivating mystery as there is great uncertainty regarding their origins and purpose. Theories abound regarding their origin – are they root cellars of colonial construction or perhaps ancient sites associated with Celts, Vikings, or Indigenous Peoples? The truth remains elusive as their exact date of construction and creators remain unknown. Despite the diverse beliefs on their origin, there is consensus that these chambers are manmade. They display incredible craftsmanship, some stretching over 30 feet in length and up to 10 feet in their interior width. Their stone walls have been meticulously constructed without mortar, displaying a unique “corbelled” design, gently curving inward towards ceilings that can reach over six feet. On Friday night, immerse yourself in a lively panel discussion featuring five leading experts and enthusiasts in the field of stone structures in the Northeast. Our esteemed panel will share their insights and theories about the origins and mysteries surrounding the Stone Chambers. The panel will take place both in-person at the Desmond Fish Public Library Community Room in Garrison, New York, and simultaneously broadcast on Zoom, allowing attendees from around the world to participate. Our panel of authors, researchers, and enthusiasts includes: Chip Marks, Michael Menders, David Steinberg, Craig Watters, and Linda Zimmerman. putnamhistorymuseum.org/events/putnam-countys-mysterious-stone-chambers-panel-discussion-tours/

Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 1:30 - 3:30pm
Cost: $10, free for children under 12
Clermont State Historic Site
Debra Bruno and Eleanor Mire each grew up knowing nothing of the history of slavery in the Hudson Valley. When they learned that New York’s 200 years of slavery began in New Netherland and extended well into colonial times, they were shocked. To their surprise, they also discovered through a Facebook group called “I’ve Traced My Enslaved Ancestors and Their Owners” that they both descended from families from Greene County, on the west bank of the Hudson. They also learned that Debra’s ancestors enslaved Eleanor’s ancestors, information that sent them on a dive into even more research, and the eventual truth that their connection was probably also a genetic one.
