PHOTOS: 'What Comes After' at the Wassaic Project
The feeling is still there, the aftermath.
Standing in front of Taha Clayton’s Soldier of Love on the seventh floor of a former mill in a tiny town in eastern Dutchess County, I welled with tears. The centerpiece of the Wassaic Project’s winter exhibition, while powerful even in a screen-sized version, is exalted in person. The subject’s hands, detailed in strength, gripping a shotgun against a warm summer scene of laundry blowing in the breeze and a distant stare, surrounded by grass and holding ground on the top floor.
Winding through the seven floors of the creative dream-space of the former Maxon Mills, ten artists have responded to “What Comes After” no cause, all effect – using 800-pounds of raw clay to say goodbye to pop culture (Roxanne Jackson); creating an entrancing primal techno bunker (Natalia Arbelaez), and exploring rocks and minerals formed unnaturally: acrylic nails as geodes, kitty litter, plastic wrap formations as unique gems (Woomin Kim).
