What are those stone structures in the woods of Putnam County? The work of colonial farmers, Native Americans or... aliens?

There are stone chambers in the woods around Putnam County, and frankly, no one is completely certain what their purpose was or how long ago they were built.

As a kid trekking around the backwoods of Kent and Carmel in the '90s, the talk of aliens outweighed the other possible (and perhaps more plausible) reasons behind the structures: food and ice storage for area farmers, the work of Native Americans, or even the work of Celts and their Druid priests, who constructed the chambers to align with their solstice and equinox celebrations in honor of their sun god, Bel.

This Saturday, the Putnam History Museum will help unravel the mystery during a free virtual event with author and researcher Linda Zimmerman who “believes that the astronomical alignments prove that they are far more ancient” than the work of colonial farmers.

“Mysterious Stone Sites in the Hudson Valley” will take place virtually this Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 5pm as part of the Putnam History Museum’s annual meeting. The event is free and open to the public. Register via Eventbrite: LINK
