A small hike to Columbia County's tallest waterfall
Despite a long summer’s drought, the fall foliage has certainly put on a stunning display throughout the Hudson Valley this season. Over the weekend, we packed up our ol’pups to hike – a loose term here for the almost-mile-long jaunt – and soak in the breathtaking autumnal views along the Agawamuck Creek and the tallest waterfall in Columbia County, the appropriately-named High Falls.
The High Falls Conservation Area in Philmont consists of one-mile of trails through woods and along the flowing Agawamuck Creek, known as the “Creek of Many Fish” to the Mohicans. A quick walk along Waterfall Way – 0.6-miles – is climaxed with a stunning view of High Falls complete with an observation area at centerstage to take it all in.
Open dawn to dusk
Dogs must be on a leash at all times – This is a conservation area with sensitive flora and fauna no matter how well-behaved your pup is
Clean up after your dog, and yourself – there are no restrooms or trash cans here, carry out whatever you carry in
Use only marked trails – Again, this is a conservation area surrounded by sensitive wildlife
