Free rides to bus talks in Beacon – On Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 5:30pm at Beacon City Hall, 1 Municipal Plaza, Beacon, Dutchess County Public Transit staff will review planned changes to the county routes, including new hourly service along routes A and B and new stops at the Amazon facility, iPark, Dutchess Community College’s Fishkill campus and the Beacon Train Station. DCPT will provide free rides for passengers attending the meeting, which can be reached via Routes B or G. Passengers should inform the bus driver of their destination upon boarding, including bus transfers. Senators to gather in Pine Plains – US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey will talk about “Motivating New York Democrats in 2024” at the Stissing Center for Arts and Culture in Pine Plains on March 3, 2024 from 10am to 1pm. The moderated discussion will be hosted by the newly formed Northern Dutchess Democrats and be replete with pastries, savories, beverages and what issues are at stake in the upcoming national, state and county elections. https://www.nddems.org
Meteorologically speaking, spring arrives on Friday! (Astronomically, and regular folk-speaking, spring arrives on March 19 this year.) Technicalities aside, the temperatures this week will feel more like early April with temps 15 to 20-degrees warmer than the average high temperatures for this time of year, according to meteorologist Ben Knoll.
It may feel like spring this week, and getting in the garden may be tempting, but when and why to prune can be a confusing and daunting task for the backyard gardener. On Thursday, February 29, from 5:30 to 6:30pm at CCE Ulster County office in Kingston, Master Gardener Volunteer Mike Piedmonte will present a general overview of pruning strategies and techniques to “help increase one’s self confidence with a loper.” Garden and pruning tool maintenance will also be discussed. $12. Volunteers wanted for the Clermont State Historic Site Harvest History Teaching Garden: From March through November, help with starting seeds, planting, mulching, weeding, and harvesting. Hours may vary from twice per month to more than once per week, depending on the volunteer’s schedule. Volunteers who work at least 40 hours in a year will receive a complimentary one-year family membership, two free tickets to annual benefit and more perks. friendsofclermont.org/volunteer

Application Open for 2024 Music in the Parks performers: Applications are now open for performers for The City of Kingston’s 2024 Music in the Parks series. Music in the Parks is the City of Kingston’s free, family-oriented concert series held at various Kingston park locations on Saturday evenings during the summer. Selected ensembles will receive an honorarium. Due to a large number of Kingston-based artists interested in performing, an application process has been established. The deadline for submissions is February 29, 2024. The 2024 Music in the Parks performer applications can be found at https://www.kingston-ny.gov/musicintheparks The Music in the Parks 2024 Selection Panel will be conducting reviews in early March. Selected performers will be notified by mid-March. All applicants will receive a response once selections are completed. Applicants not selected will be kept and considered in the event of an opening.
