  • 220-pound, six-foot-long sturgeon caught in the Hudson River – Members of the DEC Hudson River Fisheries biologists recently caught a 220-pound Atlantic sturgeon in the freshwater reach of the Hudson River Estuary. Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) are protected by the Federal Endangered Species Act (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service). This sturgeon, more than 6-feet-long, was netted under a National Marine Fisheries Service endangered species research permit as part of an annual survey that began in 2006. The survey is conducted May through June to track the trends in the Atlantic sturgeon population. Data are collected on length, weight and sex, and an electronic tag is inserted into the dorsal fin to track sturgeon movements. The sturgeon was released back into the Hudson. According to Tom Lake of the Hudson River Almanac: “Sturgeon this large are relatively common in annual surveys, and there were a few bigger fish netted this year. Historically, there have long been stories of giant sturgeon of at least 14-feet long. In 2018, DEC Fisheries found, through side-scan sonar, a live 14.1-foot-long Atlantic sturgeon laying on the bottom of the river near Hyde Park (river mile 82) in the very heart of their spawning reach.”
