HVNY News + Notes
Notice to boaters: Swimmers to take Hudson this weekend – Registration for swimmers to participate in the 20th Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim this Saturday, July 27 is now closed, but spectators can watch on either shore as swimmers traverse the waters as a fundraiser for The River Pool at Beacon (a floating pool in the Hudson River). As a precaution against the river’s changing tides, the 1-mile open water swim is scheduled for swimmers to splash in from the Newburgh waterfront 30-45 minutes before slack-before-flood current. Because approximately 100 to 300 swimmers and volunteer kayakers are crossing the navigation channel during this event, organizers have requested that the USCG issue a Special Local Regulation establishing a restricted area in the vicinity of the event in order to reduce hazardous conditions that non-participating vessels, or their wakes, can present to the participants. The special restriction is requested on Saturday, July 27, 2024 between 1 and 3pm. (In the event of inclement weather, the regulation will be issued the following day, Sunday, July 28, 2024 from 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm.)More info: riverpool.org/about-river-swim/
ICYMI: UC Pool Closed – The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that the Ulster County Pool, located at 241 Libertyville Road in New Paltz, will be closed for the season due to ongoing water loss issues. Season pass holders are eligible for a full refund and may contact Jodi Corsa at the Department of Public Works at (845) 340-3103. “We are working with other municipal pools to support expanded hours and/or capacity for more guests and will provide updates as we have them,” Ulster County Executive Jen Mertzger said.
Check Your Pool Filter for Beetles – The Asian longhorned beetle is active from now through Labor Day. DEC invites pool owners to check filters for the invasive insect regularly, and submit a report if any are found. https://hvny.info/info/alb
