New state forest in Dutchess

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Trust for Public Land (TPL) recently announced the permanent protection of 505 acres of land in Dutchess County to create the Grape Hollow State Forest, which will provide “enhanced wildlife habitat protection and a larger buffer for the adjoining Appalachian Trail corridor. “

The forest includes a 405-acre property previously at risk for development known as Depot Hill; and a 100-acre parcel in the Girl Scouts’ Heart of the Hudson Chapter’s Camp Ludington property.

Officials from TPL say: “This newly created state forest will benefit people and wildlife – expanding hiking trails for community members and day trippers, conserving wildlife, and providing a greater buffer for those enjoying the A.T. for generations to come.”
