Bridge Music 15th Season Opens

Joseph Bertolozzi's Bridge Music is a unique sound-art installation featuring the Mid Hudson Bridge as the instrument itself. It was created by sampling the sounds of bridge’s surfaces (guard rails, girders, etc.) with various mallets and using those sounds to compose the music. No processing was used, you hear the Mid-Hudson Bridge itself. The resulting album reached the Billboard Top Twenty Classical and Classical Crossover Charts in 2009. Listening Stations are found on the pedestrian sidewalk and it can also be heard broadcasting 24/7 on 95.3FM in Johnson-Iorio Park in Highland and Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie. bridgemusic.info

For “Pressing Matters” O'Hara has created numerous new, large scale monoprints for the windows and indoor exhibition space. Along with these new works hang smaller works which inspired the project. An O’Hara print gives the viewer a collection of simple abstract shapes to meditate on, asking us to consider their color, their blurred or hard borders, how they overlap, and how these shapes relate to one another. She would not tell a viewer what to feel when they look at her work, but for her the intent is clear. She hopes to communicate with people - to communicate her joy of life and the peace and tranquility that she feels. This joy doesn’t necessarily come easy, the pressing matters in our world weigh on her, but through meditation and her artistic practice, she is able to find daily peace. windowonhudson.org

Dr. April M. Beisaw will speak about the research behind her new book Taking Our Water for the City. For more than a decade, April hiked the New York City owned lands of Putnam and Ulster County to understand how city reservoirs changed the landscape and the peoples living upon it. In this talk, she will highlight her Putnam County work and its findings. Maps illustrating landscape changes over time will be shared and available for attendees to take home. April M. Beisaw is a professor of anthropology at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. There she teaches courses on archaeology, museums, forensics, and Native American culture. April is an archaeologist of the relatively recent past. Her active research projects use archaeological methods and theories to investigate the New York City water system and the New York State county poorhouses. This work brings April, and her Vassar students, into communities to collaboratively explore how the past shapes the present.
