On view through May 12, 2024
43 South 3rd Street, Hudson
For “Pressing Matters” O'Hara has created numerous new, large scale monoprints for the windows and indoor exhibition space. Along with these new works hang smaller works which inspired the project. An O’Hara print gives the viewer a collection of simple abstract shapes to meditate on, asking us to consider their color, their blurred or hard borders, how they overlap, and how these shapes relate to one another. She would not tell a viewer what to feel when they look at her work, but for her the intent is clear. She hopes to communicate with people - to communicate her joy of life and the peace and tranquility that she feels. This joy doesn’t necessarily come easy, the pressing matters in our world weigh on her, but through meditation and her artistic practice, she is able to find daily peace. windowonhudson.org

Cost: $25
291 Tinker Street, Woodstock
At an outdoor café a Pakistani man named Changez (Riz Ahmed) tells Bobby (Liev Schreiber), an American journalist, about his experiences in the United States. Roll back ten years, and we find a younger Changez fresh from Princeton, seeking fortune and glory on Wall Street. The American Dream seems well within his grasp, complete with a smart and gorgeous artist girlfriend, Erica (Kate Hudson). But when the Twin Towers are attacked, a cultural divide slowly begins to crack open between Changez and Erica. Changez’s dream soon begins to slip into nightmare: profiled, wrongfully arrested, strip-searched and interrogated, he is transformed from a well-educated, upwardly mobile businessman to a scapegoat and perceived enemy. With time, he begins to hear the call of his own homeland. Taking us through the culturally rich and beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a story about conflicting ideologies where perception and suspicion have the power to determine life or death. woodstockfilmfestival.org/events/2024/4/21/reluctant-fundamentalist

Arlene Shechet: Girl Group
Opening May 4, 2024
Storm King Art Center
Girl Group
will debut six new large-scale commissions—spanning heights of ten to twenty feet and lengths of up to thirty feet—along with complementary indoor works in wood, steel, and ceramic. The exhibition asserts a feminine sensibility across Storm King’s hills, fields, and galleries. This series of sculptures adapts the monumental vocabulary of the Art Center to Shechet’s unique voice. Recognized as a leading sculptor who has radicalized ceramics, Shechet now takes on industrial materials and inaugurates a new phase of her work. She brings an array of vibrant colors—pinks, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and purples—to Storm King's terrain for the first time. Learn More

In-Person Lecture: Taking Our Water for the City
Thursday May 9, 2024 at 7pm
Cost: $10
Putnam History Museum, 63 Chestnut Street, Cold Spring
Dr. April M. Beisaw will speak about the research behind her new book Taking Our Water for the City. For more than a decade, April hiked the New York City owned lands of Putnam and Ulster County to understand how city reservoirs changed the landscape and the peoples living upon it. In this talk, she will highlight her Putnam County work and its findings. Maps illustrating landscape changes over time will be shared and available for attendees to take home. April M. Beisaw is a professor of anthropology at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. There she teaches courses on archaeology, museums, forensics, and Native American culture. April is an archaeologist of the relatively recent past. Her active research projects use archaeological methods and theories to investigate the New York City water system and the New York State county poorhouses. This work brings April, and her Vassar students, into communities to collaboratively explore how the past shapes the present.
