Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival: Henry V
Monday, August 21 at 7:30pm
Cost: $10
2015 U.S. 9, Garrison, NY
This Shakespearean epic follows a charismatic warrior King and his cohort through the brutality of warfare, as the ragtag band confronts heavy opposition and their own destinies in an aggressive pursuit of the French crown. Henry V is a deeply ambivalent play about leadership, and the power of language and storytelling to shape our collective identity. The play’s central question – What kind of leadership would it take to forge a resilience and unified band of brothers and sisters from a fractious and anxious group of individuals? – resonates with fresh urgency in our contemporary world. hvshakespeare.org/production/henryv/

From Founders to Farmers: 17th through early 20th Century Archaeology in the Hudson Valley
Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 7pm
In-person and Virtual event hosted by the Putnam History Museum, 63 Chestnut Street, Cold Spring
Discussion on historic period archaeology in the Hudson Valley from the early 17th through 20th centuries. Historic period archaeology may look at urban settlements, rural farmsteads, trading sites, commercial and industrial occupations, waterfront sites and more specialized occupations. It increasingly focuses on those who lived in these sites but who are underrepresented in the historical record. Questions on ethnicity, status, economic conditions, trade and exchange, ritual, conflict, lifestyle, changing landscapes and much more in the Hudson Valley are addressed by archaeological patterns recovered from such sites. These yield artifacts like ceramics and glassware, to faunal and floral remains. Site and artifact data merge with documents such as diaries, wills, local histories, deeds and much more to shed light on individuals or families from the past and the conditions and circumstances in which they lived. putnamhistorymuseum.org

Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 2pm
The Fisher Center at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson
Music Director Leon Botstein opens the Bard season with a concert juxtaposing two distinct styles of Viennese music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries: the melodies of Franz Lehár and the Strauss brothers, and Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. The performance begins with an overture of music from Lehár’s well-known 1905 operetta The Merry Widow, written in 1940 to celebrate the composer’s 70th birthday. This is followed by two dance pieces: Eduard Strauss’ train-themed polka Bahn frei!, and his brother Johann Jr.'s Emperor Waltz, composed for the 40thanniversary of Emperor Franz Josef’s crowning. The program closes with a contrasting style from the same era, Mahler’s deeply personal Symphony No. 6. https://ton.bard.edu/fisher-center-series/
