Dutchess County’s Indiana Jones: A Vassar Professor’s Escape from the Spanish Civil War
Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 6pm
Foster’s, Rhinebeck
The outlines of this story read like a major motion picture: an erstwhile professor is trapped behind enemy lines while Fascists seek to overrun a major European country. However, there are some important differences from the major movie series: the professor was female, James Bruce Ross of Vassar College, the place was Spain, and the power-hungry dictator was Francisco Franco. The explosions and gunfire were still very real, along with the last-minute rescue by a French aristocrat. Join Dutchess County Historian Will Tatum to hear the details of this hair-raising episode of real Dutchess History. Seating is limited and reservations can only be held until 5 minutes before the program time. For dinner reservations, call the restaurant at (845) 876-8052. https://www.historicredhook.org/upcoming-events/tavern-trail-fosters-may24

Catskill Public Theater unveils “Terror”
July 9-11, July 16-18 and July 24-25, 2024
Cost: Free
Roscoe’s Fireman’s Field
"Terror," written by the acclaimed Ferdinand Von Schirach and directed by the esteemed Leon J. Van Dyke, unfolds within the high-stakes environment of a military tribunal. The play scrutinizes the actions of a USAF Fighter pilot who makes the harrowing decision to shoot down a commercial airliner, carrying 170 passengers, to prevent a terrorist attack reminiscent of 9/11 on a packed sports stadium. The question posed to the audience is as compelling as it is haunting: Is the pilot a murderer, or is he a disciplined, professional warrior acting in the defense of his country? In a unique and highly theatrical twist, the audience is entrusted with the role of the jury. During intermission, audience members will cast their votes to determine the pilot’s innocence or guilt. This decision directly influences the course of the performance, with two distinct second acts prepared to reflect the verdict of the audience jurors.
