  • Keep root, root, rooting for our home team! On Friday night, the Hudson Valley Renegades were crowned champions of the South Atlantic North Division for the second straight year, taking down the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-1 in a deciding Game 3. But the ‘Gades are now facing elimination in the South Atlantic Championship after losing to the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Kentucky on Sunday, despite a lead-off solo homer from Roc Riggio. The championship series returns to Heritage Financial Park in Wappingers on Tuesday, September 17 in the best-of-three series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.   • The Town of Wappinger resident, Alison Elena Peritikos of Chelsea, has been named a contestant on the 26th season of the NBC singing competition, The Voice. Tune in (get it) for the premiere on September 23.

  • The Harvest Moon will light up the night sky from September 16 to 18, 2024. Peak illumination takes place 10:34pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. The Harvest Moon relates to the timing of the autumnal equinox, September 22, 2024.

  • VOTE, VOTE, VOTE! National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday, September 17, 2024.   • Orange County Department of Health Commissioner resigns, effective immediately – Dr. Alicia Pointer announced on Friday that she is stepping down as the county’s commissioner of health. “Dr. Pointer has done a great job with Orange County, and I am sorry to see her go,” Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said in a statement. “Her love is for children’s health, and she wants to follow her passion in that field. I wish her the best of luck and will keep her close to Orange County Government as she helps us through this transition.” The search for the next Orange County Commissioner of Health is currently open. All inquiries about job specifications and how to apply can be directed to the Orange County Department of Human Resources.

  • Deadline approaching: The Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities is now accepting applications for its 2024-2025 program. The course, now entering its 28th year, offers a college-level introduction to the humanities, including philosophy, literature, U.S. history, art history, and critical thinking and writing. The course will be taught by Professors Marina van Zuylen, Susan Merriam, and Philip Pardi, all professors at Bard College.

    This national program aids in the transition to higher education and the workplace, and provides “an introduction to the humanities to anyone coming from a low-income household, who is motivated and enthusiastic, and who foresees financial or personal difficulty when applying to college or jobs.” A high school diploma is not needed to apply.

    Students attend at no cost, with tuition and books provided, and those who successfully complete the course will earn 6 college credits from Bard College transferable to any higher educational institution upon completion. Classes will meet in-person every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm from October 3 to June 3 (with a two week break between December 19 to January 13), at 7 Grand Street, Kingston, NY, 12401.   • Nominations are now open for The 2025 Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Bravery in Literature: The award “honors living authors and books that advance human rights in the face of an alarming rise in book banning and censorship. During her life, Eleanor Roosevelt fought passionately for literacy, the role of libraries in a democracy, and the universal right to intellectual freedom.   • Submissions for Freedom artwork wanted: The City of Kingston will be accepting artwork submissions for an exhibition at City Hall entitled, FREEDOM. The concept of the exhibition was developed as a part of the major installation of sculptor Trina Greene’s Sojourner Truth: First Step to Freedom statue, which will be on display in City Hall from September 28, 2024 through August 2025. For the FREEDOM exhibition, artists are invited to submit work that celebrates and visually represents Sojourner Truth’s legacy as a champion for freedom, justice, and women’s rights.

    Selected works will be displayed in the ground floor gallery space at City Hall from December 2024 to August 2025. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024. 

     Artists are invited to submit an artwork in response to the theme FREEDOM via the online application or to the Department of Arts and Cultural Affairs, 420 Broadway, Kingston, NY, 12401 by October 25, 2024 at 4:30pm. Works will be selected by a review panel comprised of members of the Kingston Arts Commission and the Kingston arts community.
