POK’s Social Security Office to close, officials demand immediate action

Beginning Thursday, January 30, 2025, the Social Security office 332 Main Street in Poughkeepsie will be temporarily closed for renovations. During the renovations at the Poughkeepsie office, individuals requiring in-person services are advised to visit the closest Social Security office in the region – in Middletown at 85 Crystal Run Road (Suite 100).

“Closing yet another Social Security office in the Hudson Valley is outrageous and totally unacceptable. And it isn’t just an issue for seniors in Dutchess. How are folks supposed to get their benefits if there’s no Social Security Offices open in either Ulster or Dutchess?” said Congressman Pat Ryan.

"It’s absurd to think that people from Poughkeepsie will travel to Middletown for help with their Social Security payments or Medicare,” said Assemblyman Jonothan Jacobson. “Many do not have transportation. The Social Security Administration could easily find space in the library or other public spaces in Poughkeepsie."

Congressman Ryan, who has introduced the “Protecting Social Security Act” to ensure every county in NY-18 had its own Social Security office, sent a letter to Acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano seeking an immediate establishment of a temporary full-service office, “ not be a single day of disruption in service for Dutchess County residents,” and detailed timeline for the renovations with projected re-opening date.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) noted that starting Monday, February 17, 2025, the Poughkeepsie office will open “a small contact station” at its current location, 332 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, offering limited in-person services throughout the renovation period.

SSA field offices generally offer a full range of Social Security services, including applying for new or replacement Social Security cards, applying for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits, making changes to benefit information and helping Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and resources apply for extra help with the cost of their prescription drugs under the new Medicare Prescription Drug Program. Many of these services are available online at www.socialsecurity.gov or through our toll-free service, 1-800-772-1213 (Voice) or 1-800-325-0778 (TTY).
