Botanical Exchanges: The Art of Emily Cole and Isabel Charlotte “Downie” Church
Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at noon
Cost of admission: Free
Virtual
Emily Cole and Downie Church were both prolific painters of flora, finding inspiration in the meadows, orchards, and gardens of their Hudson Valley homes. As friends, neighbors, and fellow artists, Emily Cole and Downie Church continued the legacy of artistic mentorship begun by their artist fathers, Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). This discussion will explore how Emily Cole’s and Downie Church’s artistic practices—largely characterized by the close observation of the natural world, specifically its flora—reflect personal expression, broader artistic trends, gendered expectations, and the professional artistic networks and trends of the late 19th century. Join Allegra Davis (former Associate Curator, The Olana Partnership; M.A. candidate in the History of Art & Architecture, Boston University) and Amanda Malmstrom (Associate Curator, Thomas Cole National Historic Site) for a conversation on 19th-century flower painting with focus on the artwork of Emily Cole (1843–1913) and Isabel Charlotte “Downie” Church (1871–1935). Co-presented by The Olana Partnership and the Thomas Cole National Historic Site; This program is presented in collaboration with the Thomas Cole National Historic Site in connection to their exhibition, EMILY COLE: Ceramics, Flora & Contemporary Responses, on view through November 2, 2025. The Archaeology of Kingston
Thursday, October 30, 2025 at 7pm
Virtual via Zoom
Hosted by the Hurley Heritage Society, Dr Joseph E. Diamond presents a comprehensive analysis of eighty-eight archaeological sites in and around the City of Kingston, New York. His new book - The Archaeology of Kingston, New York covers Kingston (and New York State and the Hudson Valley to a lesser extent) from Paleo-Indian times circa twelve thousand years ago through twelve thousand years of Native American occupations. The book covers the archaeology of the Dutch colonial period and the British colonial period, as well as a number of sites around the city from the nineteenth century. The book brings together new information on eighty-two archaeological sites and six related sites that are slightly outside of the corporate boundary of the city of Kingston. These include precontact and Native American sites, such as Sailor’s Cove and Cantine’s Island; the founding of Wiltwyck in the early colonial period; key sites in the Stockade District; the Matthew Persen House; maritime archaeological sites; key cemeteries; and noteworthy sites related to African Americans in the region. Along with the archaeological discussion, the book includes information about local lithic geology, glacial geology, and flora and fauna that were important dietary components of precontact Native Americans. The Archaeology of Kingston, New York offers a complete introduction to the region for anyone interested in New York history and its study and recovery. https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/jERDv4xQTG-ovry6g0GQtA#/registration

Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at 7pm
Cost of admission: Free

Jews played a critical role both in winning the revolution and in defining the republic that was created from it. During the war, every city with a synagogue fell to the British except Philadelphia. Jewish patriots throughout the colonies flocked there and refounded the local synagogue as an American organization. After the war, Jews began to press for full citizenship in the hope that liberty would apply to everyone. The founders, Jewish patriots, and their allies sought and achieved the broadest possible definition of religious liberty, and the separation of church and state. "A date which will live in infamy…" The famous phrase rallied the nation, but what was the tone in Dutchess County? On December 7, 1941, the United States—ranked 17th in the world in military power at the time—was unexpectedly plunged into World War II. Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor stunned the American public and galvanized support for the war. A grueling 1,365 days later, we emerged as the world's first Superpower. The program explores the questions “Should we have been, and could we have been, more prepared?” Presented by Jeffrey Urbin, Education Specialist, at the Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and Shannon Butler, Historian, Poughkeepsie Public Library District. The Friends of the Poughkeepsie Library’s annual meeting will be held prior to the program. https://poughkeepsie.librarycalendar.com/event/friends-ppld-annual-meeting-7933
